Result List Sorting

An important Orion feature is its ability to rank athletes and teams according to the score they earned. This includes breaking ties (e.g. when two athletes have the same aggregate score). Orion specifically breaks ties according to the Ranking Rule definition file in use, specified by the Result List.  With the Ranking Rule definition files based on the tie breaking rules printed in the respective rulebooks.

Tie Breaking

The set of Ranking Directives and Tie Breaking Rules Orion follows depends on the status of the Result List.

Future: By convention participants are listed by their names. Specifically, only the List Only Tie Breaking Rules are used to sort participants, within the first Ranking Directive.

Intermediate: By convention participants are listed by their Predicted Score. When two participants have the same Predicted Score they are sorted by their name. Specifically, only the first two Rules Tie Breaking Rules are used to sort participants using their Predicted Score. Further sorting uses the List Only Tie Breaking Rules. All within the first Ranking Directive.

Unofficial: By convention, participants are ranked according to the printed rulebooks tie-breaking rules. Specifically, all Ranking Directives and Tie Breaking Rules are applied.

Official: By convention, participants are ranked according to the printed rulebooks tie-breaking rules. Specifically, all Ranking Directives and Tie Breaking Rules are applied.

Predictive Scores

During the intermediate status, athlete scores are “predicted,” which means Orion calculates the athlete’s expected score based on their performance thus far in the competition. The Match Director will be able to choose from multiple algorithms to predict athlete scores, or choose not to predict scores at all (not recommended).

The most well known predictor of scores algorithm is using the athletes average shot fired. For example, in a 60 shot standing match, say an athlete fires a 97.5 in their first ten shots. Using average shot fired, Orion will predict that they will finish with a 585.0. A second athlete may be shooting faster and shot a 192.0 in their first 20 shots. This second athlete though would be ranked behind the first athlete, because their predicted score is only 576.0.

Other predictive score algorithms will be announced soon.

Virtual Match Tie Breaking

Orion continues to break ties in a virtual match according to the specified Ranking Rule definition file. These results are complete and accurate listed on Rezults (rezults.scopos.tech).

Result lists listed on the old Result Center do not use the same tie breaking rules, results listed on Result Center should not be considered complete.
